Definition and function of cookies
What are cookies?
A cookie is a file that is downloaded to your computer when you access certain websites. Cookies allow a website, among other things, to store and retrieve information about the browsing habits of a user or their computer and, depending on the information they contain and the way in which the computer is used, they can be used to recognise the user. Depending on the entity that manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, two types of cookies can be distinguished: first-party cookies and third-party cookies. There is also a second classification according to the length of time they remain stored in the client’s browser, being session cookies or persistent cookies. Finally, there is another classification with five types of cookies according to the purpose for which the data obtained is processed: technical cookies, personalisation cookies, analysis cookies, advertising cookies and behavioural advertising cookies. For more information on this subject, you can consult the guide on the use of cookies of the Spanish Data Protection Agency.
